The five most charitable states give 3% of their monthly spending to charity: can you guess what they are? Charity Logan Sachon / 07:11 PM, Friday, March 19, 2010 / / Report this / Vote this up / 0

We've talked about charitable giving before, but I wanted a look at the big picture: which state gives the most money to charity? I combed through the Bundle numbers to find the most charitable state and the answer surprised me!

Each state donates at least 1% of their total spending to charity, and most states give 2%. The US average is 2% and $76. The best of the best are the elite 5 that put 3% of their monthly spending towards charity, and you may be surprised at who they are - and aren't. I expected California and New York to be among the most charitable, but nope! New York doesn't even put 2% of their spend to charity. As it turns out, Washington DC gives the most money to charity, with an average of $166. If you don't want to count DC because it's a district, the most charitable state is Oklahoma! I never would have guessed that in a million years.
