Can cell phones make you macho? Guys spend 2X as much on phones versus ladies in Boston and Phoenix Phone, Cable / Satellite Presh Talwalkar / 09:54 PM, Saturday, March 13, 2010 / / Report this / Vote this up / 0

Recently I've seen a lot of guys in bars showing of their newest cell phones. And it's more than the "here's a cool new toy" as there is a lot of talk about style and looks, the kind of talk guys used to have about a dress watch.

What do the numbers say about this trend? It turns out there is some spending data to back up my anecdote. In both Boston, pictured above, single guys are outspending ladies about 2 to 1 in the phone category. The top merchants are all cell phone providers so I would guess it's the data plans and extra services driving the difference. This is also true for Phoenix, AZ (link to the graph)

I tested a few other cities like Chicago, New York and Philadelphia and found that guys spent more but not quite as much more as ladies. How does your city stack up? Try typing your city in the comparison menus and let me know. I am really curious if this trend can be seen in other cities.
