I grew up in 98115 — a Seattle neighborhood near the University of Washington — back when Boeing was big, Starbucks was a local brand, and there was a low-rent bowling alley in the strip mall near my house where Ms. Pac-man cost a quarter. Now Boeing's been supplanted by software companies, Starbucks has become synonymous with monoculture, and the bowling alley's been replaced by a Restoration Hardware. No wonder I never get to the pretzel anymore.
