Parking in Washington Heights was a nightmare Getting Around Janet Paskin / 05:01 PM, Monday, December 21, 2009 / / Report this / Vote this up / 0

People think New Yorkers pay for parking because they're worried about crime. I'd suggest that's not the whole story. When I lived in Washington Heights (10033), way up in the skinny northern end of Manhattan, about 70 blocks off most tourist maps, parking was a nightmare. I had a 45-minute commute, and I could easily spend just as long looking for parking on the street. You only have to contemplate the possibility of sleeping in your car because you *might not find a legal parking space* before you're willing to cough up for a garage. It's much better in my new neighborhood, in Brooklyn, and wouldn't you know, people spend less on car expenses. Of course, I've long since sold my car ...
