I want a car. But can I promise myself not to drive it too much? Getting Around Kristen Hawley / 06:07 PM, Wednesday, March 10, 2010 / / Report this / Vote this up / 0

Since moving to San Francisco six months ago, I've wished for a car no less than twice a week. Having moved from New York I'm used to public transportation, but there is something about the MUNI that drives me nuts. I live in the city in close proximity to several bus routes and work downtown, so PT is the way to go when it comes to commuting. Any other time, I'm grumbling to myself as I walk to the bus stop or refill my BART card... again.

I keep finding ways to justify a car: I'll be able to take weekend drives and explore northern California; I'll only spend $4 in tolls crossing the bay instead of $7 on BART. I'll pick up friends from the airport and be generally helpful. Maybe I'll even move to the east bay. And I won't drive to work, or drive when I don't have to... right?

Sadly, I don't trust my willpower to keep me on the bus when I'm traveling around the city, so I'm going to hold off on the purchase for now. I haven't owned a car since age 17 (I'm a transplanted New Yorker), so I probably don't realize how much they can cost. And it's honestly kind of refreshing to have a big, fat zero in my gas and auto expense budget.
