Are the Hamptons recession-proof? Housing market stays warm in the land of seersucker Mark Armstrong / 03:57 PM, Friday, February 12, 2010 / / Report this / Vote this up / 0

Muffy and I were thinking of trotting off to the Hamptons this weekend for a few open houses... you know, try to track down my boss's agent from Corcoran, Muffy will wear the cashmere ascot, I, the crisply pressed pinder striped dress shirt from Vineyard Vines. It will be fabulous! Oh, the time we'll have!

The New York Times today reports that we shouldn't go there expecting bargain-basement prices. The housing market is doing "a lot better than expected" in posh vacation towns like Amagansett. (Here's a chart.) According to one appraisal company, the median price of a Hamptons home was $825,000, down 15 percent from its peak in 2007, but about the same as where things were a year prior, in 2006.

Once Muffy and I settle into our new Hamptons dream home, we may save some money on daily living. Bundle data above compares New York with Suffolk County, during its most popular time, July. As anyone who's hung out in the Hamptons during the winter and summer can attest, spending changes with the seasons -- folks there average $400 more per month in the shopping, food and health/family categories compared to January. And yes, despite our predicted future savings, Muffy still thinks Citarella is overpriced. There is no pleasing that woman. I will rue the day I ever decided to go to work for her father.
