Alaska Air and Southwest Airlines are planning to offer in-flight wi-fi. Will you pay more for the service? Travel Michael Dang / 02:52 PM, Wednesday, March 10, 2010 / / Report this / Vote this up / 0

When I buy plane tickets, I don't buy the tickets listed at the lowest price point on Web sites like Kayak or Expedia. Instead, I always look for the cheapest flights on Virgin America, because I love the in-flight services: personal video screens, unlimited drinks and wi-fi access. Last summer, an employer of mine said I could take a Friday to fly to the West Coast to visit my parents if I continued to work on a project while 35,000 feet in the air. The wi-fi access was a lifesaver.

The SF Chronicle reports that Alaska Air is planning to use the same wi-fi provider used by Virgin America, Delta and other airlines, and Southwest is planning to use a provider called Row 44.

When you fly, do you choose the cheapest tickets available? Or do these type services make a difference to you? Having in-flight wi-fi during a long flight makes a huge difference for me, and I definitely don't mind paying the $12 on Virgin America to access it. If anything, it allows me e-mail whoever is picking me up and let them know that now's probably a good time to get on the road.
