My confession: I have no respect for you lazy nonprofit people
I've worked in nonprofits all my life, and until I came to NYC, my coworkers were generally focused on the reason they were there. It was more than just a job. But I've been in NYC for years now and all I see are people who want to look like they're working, bosses who can't lead, and underachieving staffs. If the rest of the business community wasn't so selfish, I'd say that nonprofits are due for an overhaul, from top to bottom.
How many boards are completely clueless? Look at the alliances between members. Look at the outrageous demands often made to executives, on the spot, with no notice. How about follow-through? Continued discussion on points of concern? All most boards want to know is if one of those sandwiches is vegetarian. It sure looks good on the resume to say you "served." No one will be the wiser.
With all of the nonprofits we have, why aren't things getting fixed? People are going through the motions, that's what I say. If you work in a nonprofit, you're there for a purpose. Do the job. Lord knows we need you to.
