Who still writes checks?

Checking

Remember checks? They were like an an official, bank-administered IOU, or what we'd now think of as a receipt for a debit card transaction. And odds are, you haven't seen one — or written one — in quite a while. Only 4.3 percent of adults still write checks, according to the National Retail Federation. Even among people over 65, the biggest group of check-writers, only 1 in 10 is still stuffing birthday cards with a check.

And now, according to this story from MSN Money, fewer retailers are taking checks. Whole Foods stopped accepting them in its northeastern stores three years ago and is testing a no-checks policy out West; Fresh and Easy, another West Coast grocery chain, doesn't take them either.

I can barely remember the last time I wrote a check to anyone other than my therapist or our dog-walker. (Very New Yorky, I know.) But that's it. Who are you writing checks to? And would you miss them if they disappeared forever?
