I have nothing saved for retirement
Age: 33
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Occupation: Independent film director
Goal: Provide a 401(k) plan for his employees
Even if you're not a whiz with your money, odds are that you think you might want to save for the day that you quit working. Maybe you've got a 401(k) or an IRA and a little bit of cash saved by now. Not Jamie Moffett. For the 33-year-old independent film director, saving for retirement is the last thing on his list. His current balance: $0. And it's not for lack of funds — he says he's put more than $50,000 in the last two years toward another long-term goal: "Right now, I've decided to invest in my company and movie-making," says Moffett, who lives in Philadelphia. "Not shuffleboard and 65-plus."
Every spare dollar gets funneled back into his business, which is making feature-length documentaries . "I've leveraged what a nine-to-fiver would put into a retirement fund," he says. "Because of that, we've expanded from a one-man band to four staffers and a production studio." And while many people dream about eventually ditching their jobs for good, Moffett sees things differently. "I don't work in a coal mine," he says. "I make movies for a living. Every day is pretty inspiring. If I had a nine-to-five job, this is what I would do from five until midnight. I'd like to do this for as long as I possibly can."
Moffett used to have a few thousand dollars in savings earmarked for emergencies, but the balance dwindled as the economy faltered and Moffett continued to pay staffing costs. Business is starting to pick up, though, and he foresees a time when he might be able to distribute money differently. "I certainly expect that five years from now, we'll start to look at a 401(k) plan," he says. "Right now we're just working as fast as we can."
