In the summer of 2007, Leona Helmsley, an infamous billionaire businesswoman and real estate entrepreneur, passed away at the age of 87. Most of her assets were given to her charitable trust, but her will also stated that $12 million should be given to Trouble, her beloved white Maltese. Needless to say, Trouble was one pampered pooch.

Pets are often loved as much as family members, and although not everyone has $12 million to lavish on their furry friends, we still find extraordinary ways to pamper them. Here are five:

1. Booking them rooms at pet hotels

"Hotels for Dogs" isn't just a 2009 movie starring Emma Roberts and Lisa Kudrow — they actually exist. Pet owners who go on vacation and want their dogs to live it up while they're away can pay up to $100 a night to send their dogs to "pooch palaces," which are fully equipped with cable TV, luxury bedding, swimming pools, and even a limo service for pet pick-ups and drop-offs.
